  1. Mpack and munpack are utilities for encoding and decoding
  2. (respectively) binary files in MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail
  3. Extensions) format mail messages.  For compabibility with older forms
  4. of transferring binary files, the munpack program can also decode
  5. messages in split-uuencoded format.  The mac port can also decode
  6. messages in split-binhex format.
  7.  
  8. In short, mpack is the MIME equivalent of uudecode/binhex.
  9.  
  10. Versions are included for unix, pc, os2, mac, amiga, and archimedes
  11. systems.

  13. This MIME implementation is intended to be as simple and portable as
  14. possible.  For a slightly more sophisticated MIME implementation, see
  15. the program MetaMail, available via anonymous FTP to
  16. thumper.bellcore.com, in directory pub/nsb

  50. Starting with version 1.5, all official mpack distributions are PGP
  51. signed by "John Gardiner Myers <jgm+@cmu.edu>".  The PGP signatures
  52. are detached from the distributions themselves, in files with the
  53. ".asc" filename extension.  If you do not have PGP, you can ignore the
  54. signature files.  For more information, see the appropriate README
  55. file in the mpack distribution.

  63. Binary distributions are provided for Linux and NetBSD only.  Users of
  64. other systems need to grab the "src" distribution and compile
  65. mpack/munpack themselves.

  67. To unpack the "src" distribution:

  69.  uncompress mpack-1.5-src.tar.Z
  70.  tar xf mpack-1.5-src.tar

  72. Then read the "Compilation" section in the file README.unix

  75. PC DOS and OS/2:

  77. The distributions are provided in ZIP format.  If you do not have an
  78. unzip utility, or your unzip utility is too old to recognize this ZIP
  79. format, there is an up-to-date unzip utility in the file
  80. unzipdos.txt.  The file unzipdos.txt should be transferred in *Text*
  81. mode, read the file for instructions.

  86. The distribution is provided in BinHex format.  There is a single
  87. "mpack" application, it does both packing and unpacking.  The
  88. documentation is in the mpack application's online help.
